Final Blog Reflection

In the first day of class, when the professor told us that we will have to blog throughout the semester I was in shock. I had never written a blog before and I didn't really like the idea of writing one either. I thought that it would be the toughest part of the class, and that I would never be able to blog. Especially about random topics that interested me. I have never really been interested in keeping a journal or a diary, and I felt thats what a blog would be like.
As the semester continued i learned that its not that difficult to blog, and it is actually pretty interesting. The assignment we were given when we were told to blog about anything we would like would have been my favorite blog. I blogged about a recent accident I had been in. I would have to say this was one of my most interesting blogs I wrote. If I were to change or re-write one of my essays I would choose my essay about a recent event that occured in 2008. I would choose this essay because I feel liek I could have written more, or even better if I had a little more time. If I had more time I could have put more thought into it and been able to interview a few more students that were close friends with Orlewicz.
Overall, I found blogging to be a really interesting experience. I was right, writing in a blog was almost like having a diary, because you could write how you felt abotu certain things on it. Surprisingly, writing your thoughts down wasn't as bad as I expected it would be. I would have never thought of writing a blog on my own. I am glad that I got to experience it, and maybe I will even continue to blog in the future.

Second Life- Extra Credit

I created an account in Second life, thinking it would be a normal game that would be easily understood. I played around with it for about an hour or so, and in the end I still didn’t understand much of what was going on. I just walked around with my Avatar. I tried various things to see what I could do on the second life program, but nothing seemed to work. I don’t know if I was doing anything wrong, or maybe I was just extremely confused. I think it would be a pretty cool program, if you understand what’s going on. What I found extremely weird but cool at the same time was that you can make your avatar fly!!! I don’t know why you would need your avatar to fly but it does. (As you can see in my screen shot of my avatar, its flying) I found it somewhat like world of war craft, where you go in the game and there’s an online community where you gang up with people and fight with other people, it’s kind of a war game. Overall, I found the program very confusing, I still haven’t learned how to see my avatars face, I just see her back when she is walking. Although I did learn how to make friends, even though it took a really long time to get the hang of it. I think if I take time and explore second life I’ll slowly get the hang of it.

Episode 1: A Gruesome “Thrill Kill” in Canton-Plymouth Township

The city of Canton, Michigan doesn’t feel as safe as it use too, after the murder case of Danielle Sorenson. Not only was it a gruesome murder but it was done for “fun” by a boy from Canton-Plymouth High schools. Jeanne Pierre Orlewicz was the age of 17 when he committed this gruesome murder. The incident put the residents of Canton in shock. After days of investigation the police found Jean Pierre to be the prime suspect, the trial date was set for April 7th, 2008.

The murder of Danielle Sorenson was very gruesome and unbelievable. Jeanne Pierre Orlewicz was in his grandfather’s garage when he first stabbed Sorenson from the back. Then he went on to beheading him and trying to make the body unidentifiable by burning the finger tips. Then Orlewicz went on to dump the body on Ridge rd. and 7 mile rd, and the head in the Rouge River which was found a couple days after the body was discovered. The residents of the area of the discovery were shocked at what had happened in their neighborhood. The trial for the case took place on April 7th, 2008 and after 10 hours of deliberation between 8 men and 4 women jurors; Jean Pierre Orlewicz was sentenced to life in jail with no parole.

This incident really affected the students of Canton-Plymouth high school, because Jean Pierre Orlewicz was just an ordinary student we talked to and went to class with five out of seven days of the week. Students at Canton-Plymouth high school got a lot of help from counselors and their peers to get through this time, especially the students who were really good friends with Orlewicz. Being that he committed such a horrific crime many people like the Judge at Wayne County Circuit Court are glad Orlewicz got sentenced to life in prison because they believe he will kill again.

“Thrill-Kill”
Throughout the year of 2008 there have been many events that occurred within the community. An event that had a big impact on my community, Canton Township, was the murder by a student from my high school. On November 7th, 2007 the people of Canton were shocked because it is known to be a pretty safe town.
This kill was known as a “Thrill Kill”, Jean Pierre Orlewicz and his friend Alexander James Letkemann, were suspected to be the murderers of a 26 year old man names Daniel Sorensen. This was not an ordinary murder it was more of a torture and something these teenagers did for fun. Orlewicz had lured Sorenson into his grandfather’s garage and stabbed him from behind, and then he went on to behead him with a saw. He tried to make the body unidentifiable by burning the finger tips and throwing the head separate from the body. The body was found on 7 mile road and Ridge in Northville, and a couple days later investigators found the head thrown in the Rouge River. (Detroit Free Press) This seemed so unreal, because of how gruesome it was. The students at school were in complete shock, and honestly it was a pretty scary situation.
I had known Orlewicz, and a lot of my friends were friends with him too. He didn’t seem to be that abnormal or someone that would do this type of crime. Although, after this incident I felt very unsafe at school, just like many other students did. The police had come to school in the middle of the school day to arrest Jean Pierre Orlewicz after they investigated the crime scene and he was a prime suspect. The trial was schedules for April 7th, 2008 where a jury of eight men and four women deliberated for over 10 hours over two days to find him guilty of first-degree murder, felony murder, and mutilation. “I am greatful that you are going away for the rest of your life, because in my view I believe you will kill again.” Wayne County Circuit Court Judge Annette Berry said. Many students were concerned about their safety at school, and needed the support of teachers and counselors to get through this unbelievable and scary event, some students even began to blog about how they felt. Jean Pierre Orlewicz was someone who students spent 5 out of 7 days a week with not suspecting anything like what had occurred. I spoke with a friend that had spoken to Orlewicz the Friday before the crime was committed. She stated, “He was acting real weird in class that day, and before we got out I remember him saying have a good weekend I know I will. Then he winked and walked off. I thought it was so creepy for some reason but I never suspected anything, and then the day we got back to school I got this news.”(Mizsie Gonzoles) She said she felt very unsafe because she had been pretty good friends with him, they talked during class and other times through-out the day too. More to talk to counselors for support were the students who were good friends with Orlewicz. Several students were also called into court to testify during the hearing.
This incident brought the school and student together more. There was a little bit of fear in everyone’s eyes about how a kid that seemed so normal did something so horrific. For some reason this made the whole community feel like not such a safe place anymore.

Dualism was my favorite slide, because the image I used to represent dualism felt like it had a lot of meaning to it. The face represented good and evil, and it related really well with the definition for dualism.

MySpace Users

The way men and women portray themselves on MySpace may be completely different from how they come across in reality. Some people may be more open about their personal lives on MySpace and may seem like they want everyone to know what is going on in their life, whereas, other profiles may be very simple. There are various reasons about why people present themselves differently on online social networking sites them in real life. Some believe it is because it isn’t “real”, and others believe people may be afraid to portray themselves in real life as they do on MySpace.
The way people act on MySpace compared to real life may be a controversial issue. There isn’t a specific statement that can be made of why this is done but there are many assumptions. The reason some people may feel it’s easier to be more open on MySpace is because it’s not a face to face thing where one can see how people are going to react to the comments, pictures or information posted. There is also no guarantee that the way people present themselves on MySpace is how they act is real life. People may be shy in real life and find it easier to tell people about their lives online, whereas, there may be people who do not put a lot of information on their MySpace page but may be very active and open about their lives in real life. On yahoo answers I found an answer to the question posted by 2sweet, “Why do people act different on MySpace then they normally are?” The answer I found to be very well thought out was posted by Lafemelle, “Some people are just like that, though...they let their guard down more on the internet. And sometimes, they act different because they feel less afraid to be "themselves" on MySpace. If it really bothers you, talk to her. If not, just know she has her own reasons for being that way.” I feel this response is true in many cases/for many people that use social networking cites.
Men and women seem to have a trend of a variety of differences in their MySpace pages. Statistics from the article show that women are more expressive about their personal lives compared to men. In percentages 43% of males did not mention their significant other at all in their “about me” section of their page; whereas only 16% of females did not mention their significant other. The article states that males tend to feel more complete and secure about themselves where as females find the need to take the interpersonal approach and be cautious about what others may think of them. Women are usually looking for validation when putting up information on their MySpace pages. Putting themselves out there and getting comments on their posts give them a rush, and may be addictive.
People seem to stereotype women as being more open about everything about their lives on MySpace and related social networking sites, compared to men. This is not true from browsing MySpace and comparing a number of random male and female profiles with one another. People need to understand that there is still a certain number of males that to present themselves openly on MySpace as well. This means that not only women are open about their personal lives, but there are men out there that like to share their lives with others too.
It still is not clear why there is such a difference in the way men and women act online. From reading different articles about social networking it seems there is variation in MySpace pages according to how one feels about sharing their personal lives. Some people find it easier to write and post stuff about them online and others find that to be inappropriate and believe in expressing themselves in real life. But from assumptions made and research collected it may be because of the confidence that a man or women has in his/herself.
